Deciding Your Digital Space

Please take a look at this google doc that has some examples for you to look at for classroom blogs, wikis, and weebly sites. We will look more at wikis next week so you have a better understanding about what a wiki is and how it differs from a blog and weebly site. Use the pages on this Blendspace to discover the similarities and differences between the various digital space options. Once you have perused through these resources, respond in the comment section with what type of digital space you are leaning towards creating and why you are leaning that way. If you have any questions about any of the digital space types include those questions so the anyone in the group can respond with their knowledge and/or experience.

  1. Mark - I've already started using weebly and making a web site. After reading through the material, it still seems like the best place for me to start. I am looking for a place that is more static, and one-way communication for now. I wanted a place to post my syllabus and examples of projects and units that I teach in my industrial tech classroom.

I'm not sure I've fully got a grasp on wikkis yet, but it appears that it is similar to a blog but there is more involvement from all participants. Everyone serves as the author. Am I right? My class isn't near as much discussion as doing; so either way, I think that a regular web site as opposed to blogging or a wikki makes sense to me right now.

  2. In the past, I have had a Weebly site for my classes. In all honesty, it has been laborious to switch from my high school classes to my junior high classes and hasn't really happened despite my good intentions. After learning more about blogs, I feel that this is a better option for my needs. I think that I will prefer the changing, dynamic nature of a class blog vs. the more static nature of the Weebly page. A wikki does not seem to fit the needs of my classes right now at all. I hope to really use a digital space next year. Especially with students having devices, I believe it will be especially useful and important in the next years to come.

  3. It seems that a blog would be best for me, particularly since I have high school aged kids, who, in theory, should be able to respond and add information in a thoughtful, respectful manner. I think at this point though, since many of my students still don't have phones or tablets (or chrome books), it may be some time before we can actively use a blog in my classes. I'm pretty sure I will become more proficient on all of these digital spaces as my own daughter has to navigate through them next year when she receives her chrome book.

  4. I like the look and the energy of the blogspots that I have visited. I am going to start with a Weebly space. I get so many emails from parents. I need a simple, user-friendly space for parents of math students.

Some teachers have a both a blogspot and a weebly. That may be they way I communicate with students and parents in the future. Blogspot for students, weebly for parents. Either way, I am looking forward to collecting great websites and videos for my math students and parents. Someday, it will be fun to get students blogging about math at home, so that we can discuss the comments during class.

  5. I plan to create a website. I am choosing to do so because I feel it will give me the best of both worlds if I later embed a blog into my website. Also with the Edmodo, I can have the two way communication with my students. Parents can email me if they want to communicate with me. I will have a link to my email on the website. Also, for right now, I don't want to have to enter things daily. I would like to create a website that has information and resources for my students and their families though.

  6. The speech therapy department has been talking about starting a website where we can refer parents for information and practice materials. After reviewing the Wiki's, blogs and websites I think we should think about starting a Wiki. It seems to have a few benefits for us such as having multiple authors and being editable by a group of people. This way one person isn't in charge of the site, we can all contribute and edit. I also like the fact that you can comment and incorporate media. A website seems to limit the amount of interaction with family and students compared to Wikis and blogs.
